I was surprised, as a 40-year-old woman, reading this book aloud to my young daughter (skipping parts, too), to find myself consumed, sneaking off into the kitchen to read ahead under the guise of doing laundry, etc. Obviously, my position was embarrassing, plus the book was conventionally suspense-heavy and light on literary values; I thought of the middle-aged magazine editor who put it this way: Twilight..always and unapologetically.

As a middle-aged woman, I have the inner resources to analyze my entanglement, to process my response and to cool the fire of addiction. Yet, as a middle-aged woman, the book was more devastating to me than a teen girl could know. Because I know from experience that youth and beauty are irretrievably lost, that you will never find that kind of perfect, melting, life-in-death love (if only all teen boys were really 100 years old and listened to classical music in their Volvos!) but, at best, will rather muddle through humanly with a good man. That, on the other hand, you might not want a perfect love, consuming and obstructing at the same time. That no one will ever “see” you or care about your every breath in the way Edward cares for Bella, not even your mother, even if you’re lucky, and as you age you realize everyone is so consumed with survival and ego, they have no resources left. That, all things considered, there are other profound consolations that come with aging, such as the development of inner resources. But it was the longing for the numinous in an everyday world that upset me the most.

Ultimately, I’m happy that this book is so female-centric in its eros, the slow smoulder that no longer is culturally justified. Young girls should hope to build a life with someone who cherishes them. The teen wish-fulfillment and weaker aspects of the book, such as Bella’s neediness evaporate next to this positive. But I feel for the legion of teen girls who lack the ability to process their literary infatuation, who wear “I

Today about Network OSPF Solutions Design

This book can do a lot for you if you have your OSPF concepts straightened out esp if you have read the anatomy book by Moy. This book actually covers all the cisco implementation details of OSPF and talks about practical real world scenarios. It has some really cool case studies in which you have to design an OSPF network to connect several remote locations with the campus network. In fact, you can download that chapter from cisco’s website.

I didn’t read this book from cover to cover but use it as a reference to figure out OSPF related issues. For instance if you want to see how the ‘designated router other’ selection works in cisco, you can easily look up in this book. It has good explanation of all OSPF parameters that cisco has implemented in the IOS and the examples show the actual configuration as well. You’d have guessed already, but it covers in detail the implementation of OSPF areas, NSSA, stub area, virtual links, IGP interaction and interface related parameters etc.

One of the reviewers who recommends TCP/IP vol 1 instead of this book is obviously comparing apple with an orange! Comer’s book is classic and a must read for all networking folks but its targeted towards TCP/IP suite of protcols and not specifically towards routing protocols.

The by Network Governing crazy

Written by former politician Stephen Goldsmith and global director of Deloitte Research, Public Sector William D. Eggers, Governing by Network: The New Shape of the Public Sector exposes a largely hidden but nonetheless monumental transformation in the manner that public services are delivered and local and national governments fulfill their policy goals. Dubbed “governing by network”, it presents great challenges to those in charge: skill-set issues (managing a contract to capture value); technology issues (keeping information systems compatible with one another); communications issues; cultural issues (including differences between public, private and nonprofit sector cultures) and much more. Governing by Network clearly outlines what works in a networked state and what is a recipe for failure, using case studies as well as firmly established practices. Chapters focus on achieving the goals of efficiency and effectiveness in the constantly changing and increasingly technological 21st century. Governing by Network is especially recommended for political leaders, political science teachers, political science students, and school library collections for its invaluable contribution to observing dramatic shifts in leadership and day-to-day practice requirements.

Simply stated, I threw the book across the room when the elephant was hurt…one of many cruel things done to animals in the book. As hard as I tried, I could not find anything interesting in the book. Scattered and full of unbelievable misery.

This is good summer reading even though I read it in March. It’s not going to win a Pulitzer, but, then Best Sellers rarely do. I would say that I enjoyed reading it but it was not beautifully written. This is her first novel. Maybe the next will be better. Her physical description of Skeeter is Eudora Welty. She had to have had her in mind. I’ve had friends like Hilly, but they never had the influence she had over others, at least, not for long. I used to visit my grandparents in Tennessee in the thirties and understood most of what I read. I didn’t know it was still that bad in the sixties. I wonder.

Why did I wait so long to get my iPod touch? This thing is fantastic! I am at the baseball game last night (free Wi-Fi at the stadium), searching the internet for the scores from other games and updating my facebook status! All without the big monthly AT&T phone bill! It ROCKS!!

Plot: Human and vampire fall in love.
Why I Read It: I had to. I’m a librarian and I was doing a Twilight Program.
Why I’m Writing This: Over 3,000 people have strong enough opinions about this book to write reviews about it. What is it about TWILIGHT and the whole “supe” phenomena that generates so much fascination?

The most difficult thing in constructing a romance plot is creating a device that keeps the lovers apart. When there’s love at first glance, and the characters fall and fall heavy for each other, what spins out the tension? You have to hand it to Ms. Meyers (and to Charlaine Harris), that for one of the characters to be human and the other…not, is a great twist. This makes for excellent romance.

But more importantly, is it possible that the recent fascination for vampires and supernaturals is due to our human need to talk about differences in ethnic groups WITHOUT actually talking about ethnic groups? Instead of working with tired racial stereotypes, we can invent new fantasy ones. Vampires? They do tend to be a little Heathcliffish toward the human race, don’t they? (I’m talking about the Bronte hero, not the cartoon animal.) Werewolves? Lovable but not too smart, and awfully apt to get into bar fights. Fairies? Can’t trust ‘em.

So congratulations to Meyers (and Charlaine Harris) for freshening up the vampire/werewolf mythology so beautifully. They’ve altered a tired old Bela Lugosi cliche into sets of romance novels that have enthralled a lot of readers, and that’s a good thing.
